Winter is finally here!

Winter is finally here!

So after a mild start to the winter, it seems that the cold weather is finally upon us! And whilst there is no suggestion that we are facing an imminent ‘Snowmagedon’ it would seem that this week is likely to be the coldest of the winter so far, as temperatures across the country drop to -7 – colder than Ukraine or Iceland!

But at least the sun is shining right?

Sunshine is important to both our sense of well being but also our health. And these short winter days can have a real impact on both.

Whether the sun is shining or not can impact directly on Vitamin D production. Insufficient sunlight [something us Brits are used to!] can result in both a deficiency of Vitamin D, but also levels of serotonin – the chemical that makes us feel happier and more energetic.

So the short days and dark evenings of a typical British winter may mean that some people suffer the ‘winter blues’ – fatigue, moodiness and lethargy being just some of the signs you may recognise. [I think we ALL know who these people are!!!]

But is there anything we can proactively do to avoid succumbing to these feelings?

Diet can have a positive impact – green leafy vegetables, eggs, meat and oily fish are all great sources of natural Vitamin D. Fortified cereals, dairy products and soya products [tofu] also contain rich sources of Vitamin D.

Keeping active is not only a great way to stay fit, but can also help boost morale and keeping energy levels high.

Or perhaps we should all head to the Bahamas for a few weeks???

I think I know which I would prefer……a big bowl of Kale and a 10 mile run! Not!
